NACDA Responds to the Government’s Inconsistent Regulations
The National Convenience Stores Distributors Association (NACDA) have worked jointly with the Canadian Convenience Stores Association (CCSA) over the past year to demonstrate to the federal government the negative impact legislating plain packaging of tobacco products will have on Canadians. The inconsistency of tobacco regulation and the imminent legalization of marijuana have been noted. A recent public opinion poll shows that nearly nine out of 10 Canadians support applying the incoming branding and packaging regulations to both tobacco and marijuana cigarettes.
The survey indicates that 87 per cent of Canadians want the same branded package regulations that are currently applied to tobacco cigarettes to be applied to marijuana cigarettes. Additionally, the poll demonstrated that Canadians are not in agreement with the government’s plain packaging policy. Nearly two thirds (64 per cent) of the Canadian public reject branding being taken away through an imposition of a generic package for either tobacco or marijuana cigarettes. Five times as many Canadians (40 per cent) believe the generic package could most likely contribute to counterfeiting of tobacco and marijuana cigarettes
Anne Kothawala, NACDA President, states “Canadians understand that consistently and equally applying the current branding regime on these two products is not the same as imposing a generic package for all. As the legal distributors and sellers of these products, we and millions of Canadian consumers are deeply concerned that imposing this type of generic brand regimen will fuel and accelerate the growth of the illicit, criminal market.”
